Whey protein could help blood sugar control.

10 July 2005

Taking whey protein with meals can help stimulate insulin release in type 2 diabetics, shows a Swedish study.

When diabetic subjects took a whey protein supplement at the same time as a high GI breakfast or lunch, they too had lower blood sugar response and higher insulin response, report the researchers in this month's issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (vol 82, no 1, 69-75).

The findings suggest that whey protein supplements could help diabetics improve their blood sugar control.

June

Whey protein could help prevent diarrhoea in humans.

17 June 2005

Researchers in New Zealand have reported that whey protein concentrate, as found in Reflex products, reduced the severity of rotavirus-induced diarrhoea in a mice model. These results pave the way for future trials with humans and could become a very useful treatment for children, and adults who are susceptible to diarrhoea.

Only 36% of the mice fed whey protein concentrate developed the rotavirus-induced diarrhoea, whereas the control group was nearer 63%. Another compelling finding was the group fed WPC experienced severe diarrhoea for only two days, compared with four days for the control group.

The results of the study are published in the June issue of the Journal of Nutrition (135, 6:1470-74, 2005).

The actual mechanism of WPC’s ability to limit rotavirus-induced diarrhoea is unclear, but is believed to stem from the bioactive proteins found in whey protein concentrate.
